It was a real family affair for the Bates family at the Centenary of Canberra Hillclimb on Sunday 20 October.
Three generations of Bates competed on the day – Neal’s father Dick drove his rotary-powered Clubman, Neal drove his Toyota 86 and Neal’s sons Harry and Lewis had their first ever runs at the Fairbairn hillclimb track in the ST205 Celica rally car (still running on rally tyres!).
At the end of the day, Neal won Type 3 1601-2000cc with a 48.62 second run, Lewis was fastest Junior with 49.88, Harry was third in his class with 47.87. In a surprise piece of symmetry, Dick and Lewis set equal fastest times as each other on the day – to the hundreth of a second!
Neal said that it had been a fantastic experience being able to participate on the day along with his father and his sons.
